György Ligeti’s Musica ricercata (1951–53) is one of the composer’s most inventive early works. In this arrangement by Guillermo Laporta, the piece unfolds as a gradual exploration of musical possibility. Each movement introduces one additional pitch, beginning with a single note and slowly expanding into a rich and complex harmonic world.
Ligeti approached the idea of ricercata literally, searching for a new musical language built from the simplest materials. The result is a sequence of miniature musical experiments that combine rigor, humor, and expressive intensity. Some of this material would later appear in Ligeti’s well-known Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet.
